Discover the traditional cheese market of Edam and visit a windmill
Edam is a cute, red-brick village of the aptly named region of Waterland, just north of Amsterdam on the west shore of the IJsselmeer. Explore Edam with a group of min. 4 and max. 14 other travelers. What makes it extra special is that this tour takes place during the traditional cheese market of Edam, which already since the 16th century largely determines the economy of Edam.
Continue your explorations with a visit of one of the windmills in the Schermer polder. This polder was a lake of over 13 ft (4m) deep until 1633. Between 1633 and 1635 it was drained by 52 octagonal polder mills. The mill that we visit is one of the remaining eleven polder mills in the Schermer, and is located between two other mills.
THE TOUR - A DAY IN WATERLAND REGION
The meeting point for the tour is Eye Film Museum Amsterdam (very easily reached, by the way), and this is where you meet your tour guide. The air-conditioned vehicle departs at 9 am sharp, but please be there a few minutes early for check-in. From there it's about a 45-minute drive to Edam. Watch the landscape pass by as you leave the city behind you and step into the world of cheese.
Upon arrival, set off on a one-hour local-guided walking tour that ends at the cheese market, where you’ll enjoy some free time. With the provided lunch pack you have even more time to explore the village. Complete your Edam discoveries with a one-hour canal cruise exclusive for our group with our own skipper. Seeing Edam from the water means a guarantee for great photos.
Finally, before going back to Amsterdam, we make a stop at the museum mill of Schermer, which is a unique piece of water management from the Golden Age. And the mill still works! Meet the miller & learn about his trade, before heading back to Amsterdam. Depending on traffic, we are back in Amsterdam around 4pm.
