Flower Auction & Kinderdijk

Small Group (Shared) Experience

This full day tour visits the royal flower auction first, where you experience the bustle on the floor, watch traders buy by the clock and be amazed by the enormous amount of beautiful flowers from nearly 50 countries that are traded every day. Continue your explorations and visit world heritage site Kinderdijk, the location of a group of 19 authentic windmills which were built to pump up the polder water.

The flower auction starts early and we don't want to miss it! In order to save time early in the morning, our air-conditioned vehicle departs at 6:30 am from a centrally located meeting point near Amsterdam Central Station. We are happy to organize a taxi for you if the meeting point is too difficult to get to.

But it's worth to be there early to experience the hustle and bustle of the floor of the flower auction hall. And although nowadays a lot of trading is done online, you still see traders bidding against the auction clock. Enjoy a tour by your professional and friendly guide, and let her share inside information about the flower industry with you from a special gallery. After the tour you have some free time to take pictures or shop at the souvenir shop, before making the transfer of 75 minutes to Kinderdijk.

There's not a windmill complex like Kinderdijk anywhere else in the world to be found. The ingenious system of windmills and pumping stations has been keeping the soil dry here for nearly a thousand years now, in a constant struggle between human brains and the power of the water.

Upon arrival, watch a brief introductory movie about Kinderdijk and learn about its history. Embark on Kinderdijk's Hopper Boat and visit two museum mills, where you meet the millers and learn about their trade. All the other windmills are still inhabited by millers and their families. Climb the stairs inside one of the two mills and see for yourself how water and wind are paramount in the lives of millers. Ask the millers anything you'd like to know about milling, before walking back (max. 0.5 mi) to the visitor's center.

Then it’s time for the 1,5 hour transfer back to Amsterdam. Depending on traffic you are back around 2.30 pm.
