Tour Description Alkmaar Cheese Market Walking Tour
Every Spring and Summer, the historic Waagplein in Alkmaar transforms into a vibrant stage for one of the Netherlands’ most iconic traditions: the cheese market. With origins dating back to 1365, the Alkmaar Cheese Market offers a colorful and theatrical glimpse into Dutch cheese trade history — complete with cheese carriers in traditional costume, ceremonial weighing, and plenty of photo-worthy moments.
You'll meet your local guide near the train station of Alkmaar and begin with a walk to and through Alkmaar’s charming center. Your guide will lead you past canals and courtyards, and share stories that bring the city’s past and present to life. Then, you’ll take in the sights, sounds, and traditions of the cheese market — without the overwhelm of big tour groups.
Learn what’s real and what’s re-enactment, understand the historical significance of the market, and experience it at your own pace — with a local friend by your side.
💡Alkmaar’s famous cheese market runs every Friday morning, from the last Friday of March to the end of September. In July and August, you can also enjoy a Tuesday evening market and a special Friday morning children’s market for kids aged six to twelve.
