Royal Auction & Kinderdijk | Flowers & Windmills

small public group tour

With a small group of no more than three other travelers and a professional and friendly guide you visit the Dutch Royal Flower Auction first. Early in the morning, this is where you experience the bustle on the floor, watch traders buy by the clock and be amazed by the enormous amount of beautiful flowers from nearly 50 countries that are traded every day. Continue your explorations and visit world heritage site Kinderdijk next, the location of a group of nineteen authentic windmills that were built to pump up the polder water.

Tour Description

The auction starts early and it's worth setting your alarm for! You can start your tour comfortable as your guide picks you up from any address in Amsterdam. Experience the hustle & bustle of the floor of the flower auction hall and although nowadays a lot of trading is done online, you still see traders bidding against the auction clock. Enjoy a live-guided tour in English from a special gallery and let your guide share inside information about the flower industry with you. After the tour you have some free time to take pictures or shop at the souvenir shop, before making the transfer to Kinderdijk.

Upon arrival at this world heritage site, set off on a guided tour of the area and visit two mills by using Kinderdijk's Canal Hopper as mode of transportation. The skippers carry you across the glittering waters of the basins; a guarantee for marvellous pictures. The first stop is at windmill Nederwaard, where your guide shows you inside how this historical engineering actually works.

See how miller Hoek, his wife and their thirteen children lived in this windmill in the old days. Now you can meet one of the current millers and ask them anything you'd like to know about milling or milling life. Then, embark on the Canal Hopper again for the stop at windmill Blokweer where you discover how millers and their families lived completely self-sustainable in the 1950s. All the other windmills in Kinderdijk are still inhabited by millers and their families.

Once back at the visitor's center your guide sets up a meeting point and time, so that you have some personal time to make a stop at the souvernir shop or to enjoy a cup of coffee or tea while soaking in the peaceful and serene atmosphere of the area. Then it's time for the transfer back to Amsterdam, where you are dropped off at the same place as where you started the tour.
